Basic Golf Fundamentals for Beginners – Part 1

Welcome to Beginner Golf Basics

Welcome to my golf TV and welcome to Beginner Golf Basics! We have designed a four-part video series specifically for beginners out there, or even those who have been playing for a short period of time. Our goal is to help you learn the essential basics that will help you hit the golf ball straight, consistently, and with a good distance off the tee. This video series will set you on the right path for the rest of your golfing career. We will cover topics such as the setup, grip, and building a consistent golf swing that will give you the confidence to take on the golf course. We will even show you how to hit the most exciting club in the bag – the driver. By the end of this series, you will have a solid, repeatable golf swing and the confidence to step onto the course and take charge of your game.

Getting Started

You’ve joined us here on the 15th hole of the Faldo course at Amendoeira Resort in the Algarve, Portugal. Before we dive into the video series, there are a few key items that you will need for the rest of the series. We recommend having a driving club, a 7-iron, a glove for your lead hand, tees, and access to a driving range or local practice facility where you can implement what we will be teaching you. These items will help make your learning experience as seamless as possible.

The Golf Club Setup

Part one of our series will focus on how to hold the golf club. But before we get into that, let’s talk about some simple setup basics. All you need for this is a 7-iron. Let’s familiarize ourselves with the different parts of the club. We have the grip, which is where you hold the club, the shaft, and the club head. The club head has a face, and the front part of the club that we will be aiming with is the leading edge. When setting up for a shot, it’s essential to ensure that the leading edge is pointing where you want the ball to go.

Imagine a 90-degree line extending from the leading edge to the target. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart, with the ball positioned slightly forward of the center of your stance. Both feet should be flared out slightly to assist in the golf swing. Your body alignment, including the feet, knees, hips, and shoulders, should be parallel to the target line. These setup basics will serve as the foundation for your golf swing.

The Importance of Grip

Now that you understand the setup basics, let’s dive into the most crucial part of part one – the grip. The grip is often the first thing we assess when golfers come to us for lessons. It plays a significant role in controlling the club head during the swing and impacting the direction and consistency of your shots. A proper grip is essential for hitting straight shots, getting the ball in the air, and achieving consistency in your game.

For right-handed golfers, the left hand plays a crucial role in the grip. Understanding how the club sits in your left hand and how to position your fingers and thumb is key to a successful grip. Pay attention to the finer details of the grip, as it can make a significant difference in your game and is something you will continually work on to improve.

By focusing on these essential elements, you will build a solid foundation for your golf game and set yourself up for success on the course. Stay tuned for the next part of our video series, where we will delve deeper into the fundamentals of golf for beginners. Learn, practice, and enjoy the journey to becoming a better golfer!
